DuTCH.audio IMx.c module based

The DuTCH audio IM series machines are based around modules and because of that, it’s possible to have a custom (1u and 2u 19 inch) machine to fit your needs. But there are some things to keep in mind.

  • There are physical limitations. Fitting a lot of push-buttons next to a lot of attenuators is not easy or might not be even possible at all.
  • It's NOT possible to combine modules into one module. You will always need 2 seperate modules for that.
  • Insert modules are based on 2 inserts per module. All modules have a DB25 connector (XLR is not possible) which always holds 2 inserts.
  • Combining ICx.x series or MC1.x series with the IM modules is NOT possible Both The ICx.x and MC1.x are based on a fixed system.
  • When we start designing your custom product, we will charge a €75 design fee. This fee will be discounted from the final price when you order the product, but will not be refunded in case of a cancellation of the order.

For a fully working custom system, you first need to decide if you want a 1u or 2u Machine. Then you need to pick the input modules, inserts and output. Please send us a list of the modules (use the module name) you want mounted and in what order you want them. Below are all modules you can choose from.

Input modules

All input modules make use of Goldplated Neutrik XLR's, except for the summing input Type E which makes use of a (Tascam standard) goldplated DB25 connector.

Input type A (2x input, active gain, LR swap, polarity swap)
  • 2 stereo inputs with dedicated pushbutton per input
  • Bypassable active gain with +/-5.5db gain range in 0.5dB per step (optional 0.25 per step and +/-2,75dB gain range = Input A 0.25)
  • Left/right swap
  • Polarity swap
  • All inputs are Neutrik goldplated XLR’s

2 inputs:
You can choose between the 2 inputs by pushing the corresponding button. It’s also possible to use both inputs at the same time, but keep in mind that this will cause impedance and so level changes because of the channels summed together.

Swap L/R:
When you engage the ‘swap l/r’ button the left and right channel will be swapped in order. Sometimes this will bring things to the surface that you didn’t notice before because of the new listening approach.

Polarity:
The ‘polarity’ button will swap the polarity of both Left and Right. Sometimes swapping polarity will give a better response, mostly in the low frequencies. In most cases swapping polarity is not needed, but in the cases where you want to, this button comes in very handy. Keep in mind that obviously this only works with balanced signals.

Active gain:
Both inputs are passive with just relays, but by pushing the ‘active gain’ button you will enable the active gain stage which enables you to change the input gain to your liking. In the mid/0 position, there is no gain applied though it passes the active gain circuit. You can change the gain in 23x0.5dB steps from +5.5dB to -5.5dB with stepped switches.

Input type B (2x input, active gain, polarity swap)
  • 2 stereo inputs with dedicated pushbutton per input
  • Bypassable stepped active gain with +/-5.5db gain range in 0.5dB per step (optional 0.25 per step and +/-2,75dB gain range = Input A 0.25)
  • Polarity swap.
  • All inputs are Neutrik goldplated XLR’s

Input type C (2x input, active gain)
  • 2 stereo inputs with dedicated pushbutton per input
  • bypass-able stepped active gain with +/-5.5db gain range in 0.5dB per step (optional 0.25 per step and +/-2,75dB gain range = Input type A 0.25)
  • All inputs are Neutrik goldplated XLR’s

2 inputs:
You can choose between the 2 inputs by pushing the corresponding button. It’s also possible to use both inputs at the same time, but keep in mind that this will cause impedance and so level changes because of the channels summed together.

Active gain:
Both inputs are passive with just relays, but by pushing the ‘active gain’ button you will enable the active gain stage which enables you to change the input gain to your liking. In the mid/0 position, there is no gain applied though it passes the active gain circuit. You can change the gain in 23x0.5dB steps from +5.5dB to -5.5dB with stepped switches.

artnr: Input type C

Input type D (1x passive input)
  • 1 stereo passive input.
  • All inputs are Neutrik goldplated XLR’s

Input:
This is a basic passive input with just one input. Basically just 2x XLR input connectors straight into the first insert.

artnr: Input type D

Input type E (4 input summing input)
  • 4 stereo inputs with passive summing circuit.
  • Active makeup gain with +/-5.5db gain range in 0.5dB per step
  • DB25 Tascam standard connector for inputs (channel 1, 3, 5, 7 = left / channel 2, 4, 6, 8 = right)

Summing amp:
This is a 4x stereo input summing amp for analog summing/stem-mastering purposes. The summing is passive with just resistors, the makeup gain is active and is always active to make up for the gain loss of the analog summing. You can change the gain in 23x0.5dB steps from +5.5dB to -5.5dB with a stereo/dual gang stepped switch.

The input connector is a DB25 following the Tascam standard.
Channel 1, 3, 5 and 7 are Left inputs
Channel 2, 4, 6 and 8 are Right inputs

Insert modules

All inserts are based on 2 inserts per module and they make use of the analog Tascam (goldplated) DB25 standard with 2x stereo in and 2x stereo output. XLR instead of DB25 is not possible. More info about the standard we use can be found on the FAQ page.

Even though the module-based system is really flexible, it's not possible to combine, let's say MS and blend on one module. You will need 2 seperate modules for that or use the 'Special type B' module, which combines MS and blend. But this module is quite large and this makes it harder to combine with other modules.

Passive insert modules

Passive type A (2x passive insert with order swap)
  • 2 passive inserts with order swap functionality (1 > 2 or 2 > 1)
  • 3 buttons; 2x for inserts, 1x for swap

Passive with swap
This is a 100% passive insert section with just relays. When disabled, it will directly pass the signal internally to the next stage. When you enable the insert (1 and/or 2), it will pass the signal to the corresponding send/return. It will first pass insert 1 and then it goes into insert 2. When you push the ‘swap 1 /2’ button, it will swap the order of the inserts. So instead of 1>2 it will become 2>1.

This module can also be placed on a different position like insert 3/4 or 5/6.

artnr: Pass type A

Passive type B (2x passive insert)
  • 2 passive inserts
  • 2 buttons for inserts

Passive:
This is a 100% passive insert section with just relays. When disabled, it will directly pass the signal internally to the next stage. When you enable the insert (1 and/or 2), it will pass the signal to the corresponding send/return.

This module can also be placed on a different position like insert 3/4 or 5/6.

artnr: Pass type B

Passive type C (2x passive insert pre/post second insert)
  • 2 passive inserts with pre/post swap functionality on second insert (1>2>..>7>8>out or 8>1>2>..>7>out)
  • Pre function can also be placed at another position, for instance (1>2>3>4..>7>8>out or 1>2>8>3>4..>7>out)
  • 3 buttons; 2x for inserts, 1x for pre (off is post, on is pre)

Pre/post:
This is a 100% passive insert section with just relays. With this module you can swap the order of both inserts from insert 8 to pre insert 1, so it basically becomes insert 0. When you push the ‘8 pre’ button, this is what will happen:

8 pre/post off: inputs > 1>2>3>4>5>6>7>> outputs|
8 pre/post on: inputs > 8>1>2>3>4>5>6 >7> outputs

artnr: Pass type C

Passive type D (2x passive insert pre/post first insert)
  • 2 passive inserts with pre/post swap functionality on first insert (1>2>..>7>8>out or 7>1>2>..>8>out)
  • Pre function can also be placed at another position, for instance (1>2>3>4..>7>8>out or 1>2>7>3>4..>8>out)
  • 3 buttons; 2x for inserts, 1x for pre (off is post, on is pre)

Pre/post:
This is a 100% passive insert section with just relays. With this module you can swap the order of the first insert from insert 7 to pre insert 1, so it basically becomes insert 0. When you push the ‘7 pre’ button, this is what will happen:

7 pre off: inputs > 1>2>3>4>5>6>7>8 > outputs
7 pre on: inputs > 7>>1>2>3>4>5>6>8 outputs

artnr: Pass type D

Passive type E (2x passive insert pre/post both insert)
  • 2 passive inserts with pre/post swap functionality on both insert (1>2>..>7>8>out or 7>8>1>2>..>out)
  • Pre function can also be placed at another position, for instance (1>2>3>4..>7>8>out or 1>2>7>8>3>4..>out)
  • 3 buttons; 2x for inserts, 1x for pre (off is post, on is pre)

Pre/post:
This is a 100% passive insert section with just relays. With this module you can swap the order of the second insert from insert 8 to pre insert 1, so it basically becomes insert 0. When you push the ‘8 pre’ button, this is what will happen:

7/8 pre off: inputs > 1>2>3>4>5>6>7>8 > outputs
7/8 pre on: inputs > 7>8>>1>2>3>4>5>6> outputs

artnr: Pass type E

Passive type F (2x passive insert, swap, master/mix mode)
  • 2x passive inserts with order swap (1 > 2 or 2 > 1)
  • 'master/mix mode'. Sends the connected gear to a second DB25 when not inserted in the chain so that they can be used for send/return on something like a summing box.
  • Because of its size, this module is only available for 2u units.

Master/mix:
This is a 100% passive insert section with just relays. When disabled, it will directly pass the signal internally to the next stage. When you enable the insert (1 and/or 2), it will pass the signal to the corresponding send/return. It will first pass insert 1 and then it goes into insert 2. When you push the ‘swap’ button, it will swap the order of the inserts. So instead of 1>2 it will become 2>1. When an insert (either 1 and/or 2) is not enabled in the chain, it will be send directly to the second DB25 mix mode connector. This way the connected equipment could be used for something else then just the masterchain like a summing box or aux on a mixer.

This module can also be placed on a different position like insert 3/4 or 5/6.

Mid/Side insert modules

MS type A (2x insert with mid/side)
  • 2 inserts with mid/side (working in mid/side on both inserts at once when engaged)
  • MS can be bypassed to work in 100% passive mode.
  • 3 buttons; 2x for insert, 1x for mid/side

MS mode:
When the mid/side mode is switched off, both inserts will be 100% passive and will not pass the active MS circuit. When you enable the MS circuit, it will pass the active MS matrix and signals will be encoded to mid (left) and side (right).

artnr: MS type A

MS type B (2x insert with mid/side, MS mute, width)
  • 2 inserts with mid/side (working in mid/side on both inserts at once when engaged)
  • MS can be bypassed to work in 100% passive mode.
  • seperate Mid and side mute
  • Bypassable Width control with a stepped gain range of -6.5dB > 3.5dB
  • 6 buttons; 2x for insert, 1x for mid/side, 2x mid/side mute, 1x width enable

MS mode:
When the mid/side mode is switched off, both inserts will be 100% passive and will not pass the active MS circuit. When you enable the MS circuit, it will pass the active MS matrix and signals will be encoded to mid (left) and side (right).

Width:
When you enable the ‘width’  button, the width circuit becomes active and you can change the gain of the side channel and so, making it more wide or narrow. We chose to use a dedicated width enable button for A/B purposes. The width gain range is -6.5/+3.5dB with 23 steps. This way you have more precise control then with course steps and a big range you probably won’t need.

Mid / Side mute:
The ‘mute mid’ and ‘mute side’ buttons will let you mute mid or side so that you can listen to just the sum (mid) or the diff (side).

Other MS functions:
When you don’t use the inserts, you can still make use of the mid/side functionality. When the ‘stereo/ms’ button is set to MS, it passes through the active MS circuit. This way you can change the gain of the side channel and you can also listen to just the mid or side channel by muting mid or side.

artnr: MS type B

MS type C (2x insert with mid/side, MS mute)
  • 2 inserts with mid/side (working in mid/side on both inserts at once when engaged)
  • MS can be bypassed to work in 100% passive mode.
  • Seperate Mid and side mute
  • 5 buttons; 2x for insert, 1x for mid/side, 2x mid/side mute

MS mode:
When the mid/side mode is switched off, both inserts will be 100% passive and will not pass the active MS circuit. When you enable the MS circuit, it will pass the active MS matrix and signals will be encoded to mid (left) and side (right).

Blend/Parallel insert modules

Blend type A (2x insert, blend on first insert)
  • 2 inserts with blend parallel processing on first insert
  • 2 seperate stepped attenuators for wet and dry (range 0 / -33dB and off)
  • First insert can be parallel or passive
  • Second insert is always passive
  • 3 buttons, 2x for insert, 1x for blend/passive mode

First insert:
With the ‘blend’  button you can switch between passive or blend/parallel mode. When in passive mode, it will not pass the active circuit and it will just pass relays.

Second insert:
The second insert is a regular passive insert with just relays.

Wet/dry with 2 controls
Most parallel processing uses one control for blending from wet to dry and uses a potmeter with percentages instead of dB's. The blend circuit we designed uses two separate controls for both wet and dry with stepped switches instead of one potmeter. The first steps on the stepped attenuators have 1 dB per step and the last steps have more course steps, the lowest step is -33dB. The off position mutes the wet or dry signal. This approach means, no channel imbalance, perfect recall, way better control and dB's instead of percentages. Another advantage is that it's pretty much impossible to an AB between parallel processing and regular with one knob because there will always be a gain difference. With 2 controls you can adjust the dry and wet so that it's exactly level-matched compared to the passive mode. You can then simply level-matched AB by pressing the blend button.

Using wet/dry as active gain
This is kinda like a neat hidden feature. It's possible to activate the blend function when insert 1 is not activated. The wet and dry knobs become gain knobs and they will be behave like an active gain in between the inserts. Because the wet control is not passing the insert itself, you can combine the wet/dry gains to add up to 6dB gain.
It's possible to remove this 'hidden feature', the blend function can then not be activated then when the insert is not active. Please let us know if you don't want this at no extra cost.

artnr: Blend type C

Blend type D (1x insert with post wet control, XLR instead of DB25)
  • Post blend function with dry always at 100% and wet blend in using a potmeter (used for post blending in saturation or reverb)
  • Makes use of 4x XLR connector instead of DB25, this module can only be used in a 2U case.
  • 1 button for insert + 1x potmeter for wet blend.

Post blend:
This module only has one insert with an active parallel/blend function and uses XLR connectors for the inserts. The dry signal is always at 100% and the wet signal can be blended in using a potmeter. Please keep in mind that a potmeter has a way higher tolerance then a stepped switch and will have some left/right drift. This insert is only suitable for blending in a bit of reverb or saturation to the end of the chain. For real parallel processing we urge you to use the Blend type A/B/C modules.

Special insert modules

Special type A (2x passive insert, swap, master/mix mode)
  • 2x passive inserts with order swap (1 > 2 or 2 > 1)
  • 'master/mix mode'. Sends the connected gear to a second DB25 when not inserted in the chain so that they can be used for send/return on something like a summing box.
  • Because of its size, this module is only available for 2u units.

Master/mix:
This is a 100% passive insert section with just relays. When disabled, it will directly pass the signal internally to the next stage.

NOTE: This module is quite large and will not always combine easily with multiple modules.

artnr: Special type A

Special type B (2 inserts, MS and blend combined)
  • 2 inserts with Mid Side processing and blend combined on one module
  • MS can be bypassed to work in stereo mode.
  • seperate Mid and side mute
  • Bypassable Width control with a stepped gain range of -6.5dB > 3.5dB
  • Bypassable Blend on first insert (second insert is passive or mid/side)
  • 2 seperate stepped attenuators for wet and dry (range 0 / -33dB and off)
  • First  insert can be parallel or passive

Combined MS and blend module

Mid side encoding:
The first step of this module is MS encoding followed by the inserts. When 'Mid Side' is disabled, the module will work in passive stereo mode. The 'Width' button will enable the width section with a stepped attenuator from -6.5dB till +3.5dB. The 'M Mute' and 'S Mute' will mute the M or S channel.

First insert:
With the ‘blend’  button you can switch between passive or blend/parallel mode. When in passive mode, it will not pass the active circuit and it will just pass relays. The blend section has 2 seperate controls for wet and dry.

Second insert:
The second insert is in passive or MS mode, depending on the setting of the MS section.

Mid side decoding:
After the inserts the signal will be decoded again from mid/side to stereo. If the MS section is disabled, the MS section will be fully bypassed and runs in passive mode.

Wet/dry with 2 controls
Most parallel processing uses one control for blending from wet to dry and uses a potmeter with percentages instead of dB's. The blend circuit we designed uses two separate controls for both wet and dry with stepped switches instead of one potmeter. With 2 controls you can adjust the dry and wet so that it's exactly level-matched compared to the passive mode. You can then simply level-matched AB by pressing the blend button.

Using wet/dry as active gain
This is kinda like a neat hidden feature. It's possible to activate the blend function when insert 2 is not activated.

NOTE: This module is quite large and will not always combine easily with multiple modules.

Output modules

All output modules make use of Goldplated Neutrik XLR's.

Output type A (2x output, stepped active gain)
  • 2 passive or active stereo outputs with dedicated pushbutton per output
  • Bypassable active gain with +/-5.5db gain range in 0.5dB per step
  • global insert bypass to bypass all inserts
  • All outputs are Neutrik goldplated XLR’s

Outputs:
You can choose between the 2 outputs by selecting the corresponding button. It’s also possible to use both outputs at the same time, but keep in mind that this will cause impedance mismatches and so level/sounstage changes. At special request we could add summing resistors to the circuit to avoid this, but keep in mind that you will loose some output gain.

Active gain:
The output of this module is 100% passive but when you engage the active gain button, the active output gain stage comes active. It has a 23 steps gain stage with 0.5dB per step (range +/- 5.5dB). You can use this to drive the output into your AD at the exact gain you want.

Insert bypass:
By pressing the 'insert bypass' button all inserts will be bypassed at once. The button will become red and all insert buttons will be 'greyed out' and no single circuit in the insert section will be active.

Output type B (2x output, stepped active gain, 0.25/0.5 range switch)
  • 2 passive or active stereo outputs with dedicated pushbutton per output
  • Bypassable active gain
  • Gain range switch for 0.25 or 0.5dB per step (+/- 5.5dB or +/- 2.75dB)
  • global insert bypass to bypass all inserts
  • All outputs are Neutrik goldplated XLR’s

Outputs:
You can choose between the 2 outputs by selecting the corresponding button. It’s also possible to use both outputs at the same time, but keep in mind that this will cause impedance mismatches and so level/sounstage changes. At special request we could add summing resistors to the circuit to avoid this, but keep in mind that you will loose some output gain.

Active gain:
The output of this module is 100% passive but when you engage the active gain button, the active output gain stage comes active. It has a 23 steps gain stage with 0.5dB per step (range +/- 5.5dB) or by flipping the gain range switch 0.25dB  per step (range +/- 2.75dB). You can use this to drive the output into your AD at the exact gain you want.

Insert bypass:
By pressing the 'insert bypass' button all inserts will be bypassed at once. The button will become red and all insert buttons will be 'greyed out' and no single circuit in the insert section will be active.

Output type C (2x output with active gain with a +/-10dB stereo potmeter)

The active gain uses a stereo potmeter with a range of +/- 10dB. You can also easily use this output-stage as a bypass gain compensation to compensate for level loss when in bypass. You can also use this to drive the output into your AD but because of the nature of a potmeter, it's harder to make a recall.

Insert bypass:
By pressing the 'insert bypass' button all inserts will be bypassed at once. The button will become red and all insert buttons will be 'greyed out' and no single circuit in the insert section will be active.

artnr: Output type C

Output type D (1x passive output)
  • 1 passive stereo output
  • global insert bypass to bypass all inserts
  • All outputs are Neutrik goldplated XLR’s

Output:
This is a basic passive output with just one single stereo out with XLR's straight from the last insert inline.

Insert bypass:
By pressing the 'insert bypass' button all inserts will be bypassed at once. The button will become red and all insert buttons will be 'greyed out' and no single circuit in the insert section will be active. If you don't need this bypass or when the design of the frontpanel will not allow it for space reasons, it can be left out.
